World Cancer Day, marked on February 4, is observed to raise awareness about cancer and its prevention, and also to encourage early detection.
CRRT organized an event on Sunday, the 2nd Feb 2014 at the Museum Theatre, Egmore Chennai.
Dr. V. Shanta, Chairman Cancer Institute, Adyar, delivered a lecture to one and all, on the theme, `Debunk the Myths and Explore new Dimensions in Cancer Care'
Justice V. Ramasubramanian, High Court Judge shared his extensive knowledge to briefly explain `Patent issues in cancer drugs'
Mrs. Jayashree Gururaj who had treatment for Breast Cancer 6 years ago, released a short film on `Lymhedema Awareness' on the occasion.

The Event was well attended by the Trust's donors, patients and well wishers.

Yet another remarkable highlight of the program was a descriptive painting on “HOPE” done by Sonia Varma, a cancer survivor who through her artwork, threw light on the “Care Giver”. The painting goes up for sale, the proceeds of which will go to CRRT.

The British Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Mike Nithavrianakis paid a visit to CRRT at Kumaran Hospital on the 26th of September 2013. Dr. S. G. Ramanan briefed him about the various activities of the Trust.Dr. P. Shivakumar, M.D., Kumaran Hospital and Prof. Mahalingam of Biotech Dept, I.I.T. Madras were also present to greet our guest. CRRT hopes to collaborate with U.K. in the field of cancer biology and palliative care medicine.

RELIEF FOR PATIENTS:
This is the foremost objective of the Trust. Since its inception, the Trust has supported more than 700 patients. Support includes drug costs, surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, nursing care and in some cases hospital charges. Patients with terminal cancer are also provided palliative care.

The doctors of the Trust extend their help to all cancer patients regardless of their economic status, by way of providing Chemotherapy drugs at distributor rates and also making arrangements for CT scans/MRI and other such investigations to be done at concessional prices.



Screening Camp: We have been actively conducting 2 SCREENING CAMP PROGRAMS every month

SCREENING CAMP - INDIAN NAVY
CRRT conducted a screening camp for the women of the Indian Navy at Navy Nagar, Chennai, on the 25th of January 2014. An Awareness lecture was also given to all present there. Dr. S. Vijaya, Dr. P.Rohini, Dr. Vandana Mahajan and Dr. Meenakashi Sundar volunteered their services for the camp.

A Screening Camp exclusively for women, was conducted by CRRT, on 11.9.2013, at the Indian Coast Guard, Eastern Region, where 81 women were screened by Senior Radiation Oncologist, Dr. S. Vijaya and by Dr. V. Divya, Dr. Tejaswi Thirumala and Dr. Damera Sri Pavani from St. Isabel's Hospital.
An Awareness Lecture on `Cancer in Women' was delivered by Dr. Ramanan.


Our Trust along with Gurudevi Sri Janaky Matha Ashram Charitable Trust of Thanjavur, conducted its 6th `Free Cancer Screening Camp' in Thanjavur on 10th February 2013. 82 patients were screened but fortunately no case of cancer was detected. Mr.Karthik, a Clinical Psychologist gave a guest lecture regarding the evils of tobacco. Dr. S. Vijaya, Senior Radiation Oncologist gave an Awareness Lecture on Cancer.

AWARENESS PROGRAMMES:

Educating the public about the basics of cancer, its common symptoms, early detection and prevention and removal of the stigma attached to the disease is an important aspect in the fight against cancer and a primary goal of our Trust.

Awareness Programs are regularly held by our team in various city colleges and at Government and corporate offices, regarding cancer, its treatment, the myths about cancer in the society and the ways to reduce risk of developing cancer.
Since tobacco use is one of the leading causes of cancer, educating the public regarding tobacco use, its ill-effects and ways to quit the habit form an integral part of these programs.


CRRT has joined hands with Sri Thapovanam Trust, Chennai in an endeavor to conduct a series of Cancer Awareness and Tobacco Cessation Programs at various places in and around Chennai. Thanks to the zealous efforts of Mr. Sudhakar, who runs Sri Thapovanam Trust, the Ist Camp in this Cancer Education Series was flagged off at Rane Brake Holding Ltd. in Ambattur Estate on the 26th of December 2013. Cancer Awareness lectures were delivered to the residents of Avvaipuram, Nungambakkam on the 17th of December 2013 and to the senior students of MCTM Boys Higher Secondary School.

An awareness program on Tobacco Cessation was conducted on the 26th of July, 2013 for high school students of SVS Higher Secondary School in Park Town. The awareness talk, delivered by CRRT's Medical Social Worker, Mr. George Fernandez was to educate the students about the hazards of using tobacco.
 
Cancer Awareness Program was held at the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion Campus, Avadi on the 22nd of June, 2013. The program was attended by more than 300 men and women police trainees and personnel. The highlight of the program was the talk given by Mr. A Sharfuddin (Laryngectomy survivor) on the harmful effects of smoking and the need to quit. This was an eye opener for many of the participants.
